Check Point R80.20 – How to Install Standalone Firewall

Step 1: Install R80.10 with initial configuration

a.      Connect to console port

b.      Choose Install Gaia on a System

c.      Click ok to procced with Gaia Installation

d.      Perform partitions Configuration

You can assign the disk space as per your requirement, I will leave it as default. Click OK to proceed further.

e.      Set admin password

f.       Select Management Interface as you wish, In hardware module you will get one Interface Mgmt which is uniquely designed for management purpose.

Note: Hardware module Mgmt Port MAC address is bind with license system. If you want to generate license to get support from Check Point TAC then you need to use this Interface MAC address.

g.      Configure Mgmt IP or leave it default. You can also select DHCP option to assign IP to connected device automatically.

h.      It will format disk and overwrite all previous configuration.

> It will take 15-25 minutes to install new OS depends on model.

i.        Installation completed, now need to reboot firewall to reload with new OS.

j.       Next step to connect a PC with Mgmt port and default ip of Mgmt port is 192.168.1.1

Default Username: admin

Password: as set above

k.      Ping Firewall Mgmt IP from to confirm reachability.

l.       Login to device https://<MgmtIP&gt;

Note: You will get certificate error, please ignore it and procced further.

Login to firewall using admin credential.

m.    Run first time setup wizard

n.      Click next

Here, we have multiple deployment options

1.       You can continue with setup

2.      You can install new version from check point cloud or from USB bootable device

3.      You can also import an old snapshot to rebuild firewall.

o.      Reconfigure Mgmt IP or leave it as it is

p.      You can configure other interfaces as well. I always prefer to configure other interfaces after first time setup.

q.      In this step you can configure Hostname domain nae and DNS.

r.       In this section you can set date and time manually based on your time zone or you can user your network NTP server.

s.      Here you can select mode of deployment.

1.      Security gateway and/or Security Management

2.      Multi-Domain Server

We are going to configure Standalone firewall so this firewall will be acted as gateway as well Management server.

t.       Select Product

Do not enable cluster as this is standalone device.  

u.      Click next and next




It will run first time setup and reboot the firewall.

After reboot this firewall is ready to deploy in network.

v.      Configure Network Interface

Select interface which you want to configure

Click on edit and enable interface

you can use DHCP if available or enter manual IP address for this interface.

As I don’t have valid license for this firewall so default evaluation license enabled on this firewall which can only allow to configure firewall blade.  

w.    Install Smart console to manager Firewall and Policies.


Download same version smart console and install it

After installation enter Username and password along with Mgmt IP of the firewall.

You can check device status from here

System information like CPU and Memory utilization

Network Activity – Traffic Interface Table

Routing table

You can navigate to system counters.

You can configure Polices from here and install on firewall.

We will discuss installing cluster firewalls in next section.
